Battle of the Brush Episode One
Battle of the Brush is a local art competition featuring eight artists of different styles. There are four teams of two creating a piece in eighty minutes based on a theme. Episode one was toys vs robots, and these artists did not disappoint, the paintings showed everything from Elmo holding a knife up to a baby to a robot and bunny relaxing by the sunset. The painting that earned the most votes was the robots vs the teddy bear, watching the two of them create that was incredible. To view more photos from the event click here. VanDusen Botanical Gardens
The VanDusen Botanical Gardens sits in the middle of a subdivision in Vancouver. It is 55-acres of plants and flowers from around the world, with trails, a maze and little paths sneaking through nature. The colours were spectacular, bright yellows falling from trees, red rotting flowers turning purple and every shade of green you could imagine skirting every eyeline. All of the images below were taken with my phone, but I am already planning a trip back with my SLR.

Tattoo and Culture Show
The Tattoo and Culture Show in Vancouver featured artists from around the province. Not only were the days filled with endless appointments, the show also featured pageants, awards and a special tribute to the late Dave Shore (Shore’s was a Vancouver staple and passed in 2012). The zombie beauty pageant was incredible, the girls were horrifying and perfectly in character. I even caved and got my grandfather’s name on my ribs. The hour long tattoo killed near my ribs and hip bones but the end result is spectacular. To view the rest of the photos from the Tattoo and Culture Show click here.

Vancouver Fan Expo
My first assignment for Hush lead me to the Fan Expo, basically Vancouver’s Comic Con. I arrived at noon the first day, two hours after doors had opened, and the line was still the length of the Convention Center. The costumes or ‘cosplay‘ was fascinating, and a little confusing for someone who doesn’t pay too much attention to this world. The details were outstanding, it was so fun seeing a glance of something cool and hunting it down for a photo. People were friendly and excited and the panels were hilarious and random – James Marsters and Juliet Landau talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, crazy. I also came back just…

Hush Social
I have just accepted the position of Events Photographer for Hush Magazine. Hush is a local online webzine, and soon to be print mag, that features an honest look at the great city of Vancouver. My audition was to shoot their staff social, and the pictures speak volumes on the magazine. It’s a good group and I cannot wait to start shooting events around the city. To view the images, mine are the first seventeen, until the two girls hugging, click here.

East vs West Vancouver
This week Vancouver was outrageously beautiful. The mood in the city lightened and everyone was friendly. This was a spectacular Easter weekend, especially seeing both sides of Vancouver. All of the flowers and trees are beginning to bloom adding a pop of colour to the streets and it was so clear that you could see every inch of the city.

Lynn Canyon and Wreck Beach
The best part about living in Vancouver is living so close to nature. While some childhood friends were down we spent the day at Lynn Canyon and Wreck Beach. The morning was freezing, it hailed when we were walking up Lynn Canyon, but the fog in the trees was stunning. By the time we reached Wreck Beach the sun was out and skies were blue. The ocean was so still, you could make out every detail in the reflections. This also allowed for a breathtaking sunset.

Public Records – Humans Interview
Humans – Peter Ricq and Robbie Slade – hail from East Vancouver, British Columbia. The duo met back in 2009 and soon discovered that together, their different styles formed a fresh sound that blends lo-fi indie rock with addicting synth and electronic grooves. Humans have toured with everyone from Broken Social Scene, Junior Boys to Crystal Method and performed in popular music festivals like Shambhala. Public Records caught up with the “electronic half” of Humans, Peter Ricq, and learned how the band has evolved over the past few years. Now on the final stretch of their fall tour for their latest EP, Traps, Ricq reassures that their shows are still…

Public Records – Aidan Knight
Turning onto Commercial exposed small groups of youths wearing skinny jeans, large rimmed glasses and plaid, lots of it. Even without the large Rio Theatre sign, it was clear I had arrived at my destination. Nearing the end of his Western Canadian tour, Aidan Knight and his band mates played to a sea of adoring fans that know all too well, the talent and charm of Victoria’s own hometown boy wonder. The darkened theatre was packed. Stragglers shifted through the back doors during opener Leif Vollebekk’s set searching for anything, but found only standing room. As the red velvet curtains were pulled back and the lights dimmed, everyone went silent.…
