What if you could erase someone from your memory?
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind wrestles with this question. Joel Barish meets, and falls in love with Clementine Kruczynski, and after a horrible break up she erases every memory of him, prompting him to do the same. The problem comes when he begins to lose all the sweet moments and fights against it.
The movie follows the loss of a relationship the viewer sees only as it is falling apart – literally. As his memory is erased the viewer watches as objects fly away, buildings disappear and Joel and Clementines struggle to hold on.
The Oscar winning story by Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth, is a unique science fiction movie that plays with reality. From the characters to the memories, this film is a standout. For anyone looking for an interesting, thought provoking tale, this movie does not disappoint.
The fashion of this movie is also fascinating. Each character dresses in a way that enhances their personality and allows the viewer to understand them from first glance.
Joel Barish, played by Jim Carrey, is a sad, self conscious man. Throughout the movie, since it is in his mind, you hear his thoughts: “Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit of attention?” His wardrobe mirrors his personality. Dark colours, sweaters, and large coats. His staple look is a button down shirt, a sweater and jeans. Simple and classic.
Clementine Kruczynski, played by Kate Winslet, is the complete opposite of Joel. She has a vibrant personality that helps bring out the fun side of Joel. Clementine doesn’t suppress any of her emotions and uses her hair and clothing to express herself. She does not shy away from colour, and accessorizes to access, never limiting herself. Her style is unique, quirky and completely her own.
