• The Postcard Show Volume Two

The Postcard Show is celebrated it’s second year with live art, a DJ and lots of postcards. The best part was seeing the contrasting styles side by side. Some were incredibly detailed while others beautifully simplistic. This is only the events second year and it was wild, can’t wait to see what happens next year! • Battle of the Brush Episode One

Battle of the Brush is a local art competition featuring eight artists of different styles. There are four teams of two creating a piece in eighty minutes based on a theme. Episode one was toys vs robots, and these artists did not disappoint, the paintings showed everything from Elmo holding a knife up to a baby to a robot and bunny relaxing by the sunset. The painting that earned the most votes was the robots vs the teddy bear, watching the two of them create that was incredible. To view more photos from the event click here. • Is Your Food Genetically Modified?

Humans prefer sweet and satisfying foods, so it’s not surprising to hear genetically modified corn began because of the sweet taste. Genetically modified sweet corn has been sold in supermarkets since the 1960s. Without proper food labels, consumers cannot tell if they are eating these modified foods. Corn in particular has an interesting past that shows how we have used science to create sweeter food. In the 1400′s corn of multiple colours was “central to the diet of people living throughout Mexico and the Americas.” 1 The colours surprised European settlers and by 1779 sweet yellow corn had caught their attention. The sweet corn won over the more bitter red,…

  • Gluten-Free: Health Issue Or Fad Diet

Last year a friend – who I’ve known since elementary school – came to British Columbia for a visit. Showing her around town included stopping in a restaurant for drinks and appetizers, generally an easy task for two friends and looking at the menu I easily found a few options to share. This is when she sheepishly looked at me and said ‘I can’t eat gluten.’ Being gluten free has become a health fad, a way for people to lose weight by not eating wheat, barley and rye. My friend was awkward about this because she has Celiac disease which causes gluten to become poison in her body, and did not want…

  • VanDusen Botanical Gardens

The VanDusen Botanical Gardens sits in the middle of a subdivision in Vancouver. It is 55-acres of plants and flowers from around the world, with trails, a maze and little paths sneaking through nature. The colours were spectacular, bright yellows falling from trees, red rotting flowers turning purple and every shade of green you could imagine skirting every eyeline. All of the images below were taken with my phone, but I am already planning a trip back with my SLR.

  • Declining Bee Populations

With the bee population in decline, farmers have found that the little bee pollen harvest there was, would be too labour intensive to collect. In mid March Body Energy Club (BEC) employees received an email concerning our stock of bee pollen and the resulting shortage. Bee pollen is extremely good for you and contains all the nutrients humans need. Bee pollen is high in protein and contains more amino acids then beef, cheese and eggs of the same weight. If you have respiratory issues, skin irritation, or digestive issues, bee pollen is a great supplement. The problem is the amount of time and energy bees put in to making this incredible product. Foodmatters.tv reported on the benefits of bee pollen…

  • Tattoo and Culture Show

The Tattoo and Culture Show in Vancouver featured artists from around the province. Not only were the days filled with endless appointments, the show also featured pageants, awards and a special tribute to the late Dave Shore (Shore’s was a Vancouver staple and passed in 2012). The zombie beauty pageant was incredible, the girls were horrifying and perfectly in character. I even caved and got my grandfather’s name on my ribs. The hour long tattoo killed near my ribs and hip bones but the end result is spectacular. To view the rest of the photos from the Tattoo and Culture Show click here.

  • Kelowna

Camping in Kelowna was picturesque. The weather hovered around thirty degrees and a cool breeze rolled off the water. The fast moving river beside our site drifted in through the waterfalls showcased on the trail across the street. Canadian geese walked, swam and flew just beside us the whole time, while other wildlife kept its distance. This was the perfect way to relax and spend my holiday. The pictures ended up being better than I imagined and I cannot wait to explore more of British Columbia.
