Old Friends
I love putting my iTunes on shuffle, you never know what is going to pop up. This can be helpful in many ways: in deleting songs you dislike, finding songs you used to be obsessed with or in this case becoming acquainted with your next favourite.
“Old Friends” was written by Paul Simon and is performed by him and Art Garfunkel. The song was written for the 1968 album “Bookends,” which has and continues to gain positive reviews.
The song begins soft and sweet, two old men sitting on a park bench. Two perfect vocals singing in stunning harmony. As they move through the lyrics the violin builds up and guides the listener through each word.
The horns are surprising, adding a darkness. While it felt jarring at first, the build up is interesting. The confusion, the unknown, the future. It is frightening but can be exciting.
Simon and Garfunkel never disappoint. I love when one of their songs crosses my path, the deep lyrics and lovely harmonies are always stunning.
